Cost and coverage

What menopause care actually costs in Austin

The consultation, the bloodwork and the medicine are three separate bills, and only the first two come from us. Knowing that in advance is what stops the surprise at the pharmacy. Quoted in writing before you commit, in Austin.

Where the money goes

Austin pricing: three bills, and only two are from us

Three separate organizations can bill a Austin patient over one year of treatment, and only the consultation fee is set by us. The consultation is ours. Bloodwork, where it is needed, is billed by the laboratory. The prescription is filled and billed by a pharmacy, and that is where the widest variation sits.

Within the prescription, form and brand drive almost everything. Generic estradiol tablets can be under $10 for ninety days. Generic patches run under $40 a month with coverage and over $250 without. Vaginal creams sit between twenty-five and a hundred a month, and rings can reach five hundred without insurance while costing under thirty with it.

Compounded pellets are the outlier. They are not FDA-approved, no insurer covers them, and at roughly $1,500 a year they are the most expensive route to the same hormones. More on that in insurance and coverage, patches vs pills vs creams and estradiol for the rest of it. Anyone in Austin weighing pellets should price the same hormones as a generic patch or tablet first, because the extra money buys delivery, not a different hormone.

How your Austin assessment works

  1. Is menopause hormone therapy covered?

Ask about the indication, not just the drug. Some plans cover the same molecule differently depending on why it is prescribed.

  2. Which forms are on the formulary?

Patch, gel, tablet and vaginal preparations are often listed separately. The cheapest covered form may not be the one you assumed.

  3. Is prior authorization required?

If it is, ask what documentation they want. Getting that right first time avoids a refusal and a month of delay.

  4. What is the copay for the generic?

Then ask the same for the brand. The difference is usually the single biggest number in this whole conversation.

Common questions

Austin hormone therapy cost questions, answered

Answered the way a clinician would answer them, not the way a brochure would.

Between roughly $10 and five hundred, and the gap is almost entirely generic against brand name. A generic estradiol tablet can be under $10 for a ninety-day supply. The same treatment as a brand can pass five hundred a month. Patches sit in between at under $40 monthly with coverage.
Most plans cover FDA-approved forms when they are prescribed for menopause symptoms, and the estrogen patch is covered under almost every plan. Some require you to try a generic before approving a brand. Compounded pellets are not FDA-approved and are not covered by anyone.
The consultation and any bloodwork are billed separately from the prescription, and the prescription comes from a pharmacy rather than from us. Three line items, not one. We tell you what each is likely to be before you commit to anything.
Medicare Part D can cover hormone therapy medicines, and some Part C plans include drug coverage too. Each plan carries its own formulary, so which specific brands and forms are covered varies. Checking your plan list before the appointment is worth the ten minutes.
Ask for the generic by name, since that is the single biggest lever. Ask the pharmacy for its cash price, which is sometimes lower than a copay. Prescription discount cards are widely accepted. And a patch, which is often cheaper than a brand-name tablet, may also suit your risk profile better anyway.

Patient reviews

Austin patients on their hormone therapy

★★★★★

I had been waking three or four times a night for two years and had been told it was just stress. The consultation actually went through my cycle history. Six weeks on a patch and I am sleeping through.

What I wanted was someone who would talk about the risks honestly rather than sell me something. They walked through the clot data and why a patch suited me better than tablets.

Marguerite O.

★★★★★

The brain fog was the part nobody warned me about. Having a clinician tell me it was a recognized symptom and not early dementia was worth the appointment on its own.

Denise W.

★★★★

It took two dose changes before things settled, which they had told me upfront might happen. The three-month review was booked before I left the first appointment.
